I’ve had my fair share of water sports experiences in places around Japan and one thing that caught my attention in Sadogashima was the idea of exploring the sea at night. My first thought was, isn’t it dangerous? You probably won’t be able to see anything so how can it be worth your time?
In a remote island at night, the boundary between the sea and the night sky slowly disappears, especially when you look towards the horizon. The vast sea may be dark and scary but paddling along the safe haven of the sheltered beach and the sound of waves alone gives a surreal feeling.
It’s definitely an experience to remember.
Located in north west of the island in the Sakakuwan Bay, the Tassha Beach (達者海水浴場) has scenic views perfect for SUP and kayak tours along the coastline.
If you want to try nighttime SUP activities, you’ll have lights under your board which allows you to see all the way to the bottom. Also, its less scary that way because you and your friends will be illuminated on the water! Paddling around the beach, you can spot some fish or two (if you’re lucky!) swimming under you. I was lucky enough to have caught a glimpse of a stingray. Maybe you’ll also see some strange looking sea creatures and marine life action that you would normally miss out on during the day.
The daytime kayak tours are also highly recommended. If you tend to get seasick, take some motion sickness medicine just in case.
Enjoying the scenery from the coast is one thing, but to be able to get close to the amazing rock formations is something else. Everyone paddles in groups, so you won’t have to worry too much. The scenery of the beach during the day, sunset or at night all have its own uniqueness. Whichever time you choose, I assure you it won’t disappoint.
